The Anatomy of Superhero Movie Music
Leading Hollywood film directors and composers including composer Marco Beltrami (The Wolverine), composer John Debney (Iron Man 2), composer Matthew Margeson (X-Men: First Class, Kick Ass 2) with director Jeff Wadlow (Kick Ass 2), composer Christopher Lennertz (Marvel: Agent Carter), composer Bear McCreary (Agents of SHIELD) and music supervisor Dave Jordan (The Avengers) discuss the creation of the musical voice behind the hero. Following in tradition with a long-running franchise, the panelists will explore the challenges that are faced when bringing a comic book character to life and giving that character a voice unheard by the world before. Additionally, composers will discuss working with directors and how they work together to convey the story of the character. Composers will discuss creating a theme, transforming the theme throughout the story line and following the often uphill battle that our heroes travel. All panelists will show examples of their work. Join Hollywood’s directors and composers Q & A moderated by Ray Costa (Award-winning Journalist/ CEO of Costa Communications, a leading film music public relations firm).

Brian Michael Bendis is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics, currently writing Ultimate Spider-Man, All New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil: End of Days, Age of Ultron, and the hit creator-owned series Powers, Scarlet, and Brilliant. Brian is head writer of the massive multiplayer online game Marvel Universe and is working on a book called Words for Pictures, based on the graphic novel class he teaches at Portland State University. He is a member of Marvel Studios’ creative committee, which consults on their numerous ongoing film projects, including Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Thor 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers 2.
Gerry Conway
Writer, Amazing Spider-Man, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man
Known forever to fandom as “the man who killed Gwen Stacy,” Gerry Conway is also the co-creator of The Punisher, Firestorm, Power Girl, Man-Thing, Werewolf-by-Night, The Jackal, Killer Croc, Tombstone, Tarantula, Count Vertigo, Vibe, Vixen, Commander/Citizen Steel, and many other popular (and not so popular) characters for Marvel and DC Comics. Gerry sold his first story to DC editor Murray Boltinoff a few weeks before he turned 16. At 18 he was writing for Marvel full time; by 20, he was scripting Marvel’s flagship title, Amazing Spider-Man. Gerry’s most recent work in comics is The Last Days of Animal Man. His most recent writing project is the young adult novel Arkham Academy.
George Pérez
Writer/artist, Wonder Woman, New Teen Titans, JLA/Avengers
In his over 38-year comics career, George Pérez has been involved with many of the industry’s landmark publications. With writer Marv Wolfman, he created The New Teen Titans, which helped bring DC Comics back into competitive prominence during the 1980s. Pérez had two enormously successful runs on The Avengers and great personal success as writer/artist for the 1980s relaunch of Wonder Woman. More notable successes include JLA/Avengers, Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, and as the initial writer of the 2011 Superman relaunch. George is also a founding member and chairman of the disbursement committee for The Hero Initiative, a charity benefiting comics professionals in need.
John Romita Jr.
Artist, Captain America, Kick-Ass, Hit Girl
John Romita Jr. remembers watching his father draw Daredevil at home. It obviously had a great effect on him, as JRJR went to become one of the leading comics artists of his generation. His first work was for Marvel UK, followed by a story in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #11. He went on to illustrate just about every Marvel character, including Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Daredevil, Punisher, the Avengers, and X-Men. His own creations include Kick-Ass (co-created with Mark Millar) and The Gray Area. He currently draws the new Marvel Now relaunch of Captain America.
Chris Samnee
Artist, Daredevil, Captain America
Chris Samnee is an Eisner Award–nominated and Harvey Award–winning comic book artist who has drawn for Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, IDW, and Oni. He is best known for his work on Daredevil, The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom, Captain America & Bucky, and Thor: The Mighty Avenger. He lives in St. Louis, Missouri with his wife, daughter, and cat.
Nick Spencer
Writer, Morning Glories, Secret Avengers
Nick Spencer is a New York Times bestselling comic book writer, best known for the creator-owned hits Morning Glories, Bedlam, and The Infinite Vacation, as well as his work at Marvel and DC Comics on Secret Avengers, Cloak & Dagger, THUNDER Agents, and Jimmy Olsen. He also collaborated with Robert Kirkman on the inaugural arc of Thief of Thieves (currently in development for television at AMC). His first book, Existence 2.0, has been optioned for feature film development by Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes.
Roy Thomas
Writer/editor, Conan, Avengers, Alter Ego
After helping Jerry Bails launch his legendary fanzine Alter-Ego in 1961, Roy Thomas became an editorial assistant and writer for Stan Lee at Marvel in 1965. He is noted for his stints on such Marvel titles as The Avengers, The X-Men, Conan the Barbarian, and The Savage Sword of Conan. At DC in the 1980s he co-created and wrote All-Star Squadron, Infinity, Inc.,and others, and he has since freelanced for various companies. He currently edits a revived Alter Ego magazine for TwoMorrows Publishing and is involved with the Spider-Man and Tarzan comic strips. In 2011 he was elected to the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.
